I must be getting old. I am as passionate about Xavier basketball as any of you, and as passionate as I have been in my 33 years as a season ticket holder. Xavier University is a special place for me, and this program has brought me so much joy, entertainment and pride over the years. I guess that has a huge affect on my view of the program. Xavier has lost 4 of their last 5, and in 3 of those, they had a chance to win. All 4 losses were against ranked teams. Suddenly their most passionate supporters are questioning the coaches, the recruiting, the players, and their ability to make the NCAA. Some have already packed their bags for Florida, only to return at the start of next season.
I don't get it. For casual fans, I can see jumping off the bandwagon, or jumping on the hood with a tire iron. But I am always shocked to see protest marches organized on this site, and rioting on the board. I understand the frustration. I feel it too. But I have been around kids long enough to learn that they ARE kids, and therefor unpredictable. Teams that have no right doing well, sometimes do. Teams that should do well, sometimes don't. That is no reflection on the program, team, players, or coaching. It is organized sports. It's college sports.
I trust in this University, this program, this team, these coaches, these players, and those recruits coming in. I still believe they can finish strong and make an NCAA run. I am not looking down on anyone here, or your opinions. But I find many of these posts personally disheartening. As I get older, I try to remove myself from negative environments. At times this feels like a negative environment. Maybe my expectations are too high, not for the team, but for the fans.

Re: Questioning
I agree commish, I've tried to share the same sentiments several times but not as well as you have. But it does happen every year. The whiners and armchair coaches finding fault with almost everything with a good Xavier team. I've found that when I view these posts from so the often negative posters criticisms, I just chuckle and consider that some people just view the world with a half empty mentality.

I feel the same as you. After a loss I usually stay away from this board for several days because I know what it is going to be like.commish118 wrote:I must be getting old. Thanks Muncie and FinalFour! It is good to know I am not alone, though at times it feels that way.

Re: Questioning
Agree with all these sentiments. I wasn't around during Watergate, but learned in history class that many citizens not only criticized the actions of the elected leaders of the country, but actually moved to impeach the President. I still can't believe it's ture.
Then, some of our brave soldiers, true patrons, had a little fun at Abu Ghirab (sp?) prison, and there were severe reprecsussions Even some people who claim to be patriots showed disdain. Unbelievable! If you can't be a Stepford Wives, robotic, rubber stamp poster or American, may I suggest you stay off the board and leave the country?
FYI: I hear Belize is beautiful this time of year.

Wow! Xavier basketball has been elevated to the same level of importance as Abu Ghirab and Watergate!Anti-Homer wrote:Agree with all these sentiments. People can post what they like. If they want to post critical views, they have the right. I find it disheartening to me personally, and I have the right to post that also. Negative posters do not have to leave the board, but I may. That would be a shame. Not that I have enlightening posts or I would be missed. It would be a shame for me because I love Xavier basketball and I like talking to like-minded people about them.
Belize you say.

Re: Questioning
Commish and others....I totally agree with your sentiment.
But, It's one thing to discuss changes, player production and quality of play, and even question coaching decisions and ability. It's even ok to be pessimistic if one chooses to be. At least this shows that people care.
What I don't understand is the people that want to just give up on the team and the year.
One thing that it is important for everyone, and every would' be champion, to understand.......
Just because you haven't doesn't mean you can't.

Re: Questioning
Commish,
I agree with your sentiments. The program is in good shape all around, we all hoped for different results lately, but there is plenty of time to start another run. Mack's team seem to get better as the year progresses. Wisconsin last year was the exception. Hoping tomorrow starts an XU run.

Re: Questioning
I don't think you are seeing a whole lot here on this board that isn't being brought up in the coach's post game press conference(not to mention in practice). You may be wearing your heart on your sleeve a little to much.
