I loved this hire. Collins gets it and should end Northwestern's 75-year streak of not getting to the NCAA tournament. Remember, he doesn't have to beat Michigan State, Indiana or Ohio State to go dancing. He needs to find a way to get into the sixth spot or even seventh spot -- and that means finishing in front of the Penn State's, Nebraska's, Purdue's, Minnesota's and Iowa's. That's certainly reasonable -- and should happen with Collins at the helm.
Perhaps not this year, which is when X plays at NU. Don't know the author but I presume he knows the Big Ten? If so, I question my perceived juxtaposition of Purdue and Indiana. I really think it will be harder to beat Purdue this year than Indiana.

Carmody was a very good X's and O's guy, but hated, hated recruiting, and it showed. And he was even worse at selling the program to fans and alums, much less recruits.
NU always had MAC-level talent under Carmody, and played a style that could give teams fits but lead to a lot of losses as well. As the article points out, I fully expect to see more talented, aggressive NU teams in the near future.

It may take X a couple years to gain the top recruits to be in the hunt come March. No longer the big fish in a small pond.

Some species need to swim upstream to spawn.
