Graduation Season is quickly approach and as many High School Seniors prepare for the May 1 declaration deadline many of them are filled with anxiety over the cost of funding a college education. . One student in Philadelphia is taking matters into his own hands and using social media in a unique way to try and gain support.
Meet Marquise Cornish. Marquise is a student at Mastery Charter Thomas Campus. He has worked hard to earn good grades but as a youth Marquise was raised in and out the foster care system. After earning an acceptance to his dream institution, Xavier University in Cincinnati Ohio and after receiving his financial aid package which included some scholarships, grants and federal loans, he was shocked to learn that even after being classified as an independent student due to his previous foster care status, he still would be expected to come up with a whopping 17 thousand dollars in order to attend. Marquise applied to numerous outside scholarships but also decided to develop a campaign on the crowd funding website Indiegogo.com. He decided to ask 17 thousand people for one dollar in the hopes of achieving his goal.
Marquise says, "To me, an opportunity is earned, not given." Recently I was accepted to my dream school, Xavier University. I'm really excited about the opportunity but college, as I'm sure you already know, is very expensive and even after financial aid and applying to numerous scholarships I still have a gap of $17,000. As a child of the foster care system, I am considered a independent student, and it is almost impossible to raise 17,000 on my own. I only ask for 17,000 people to sponsor one dollar to contribute to this opportunity. If you invest in me, in return I vow to help other foster care children pursue their dreams. I've gotten myself this far in my education, and I need your help to get me to the next step. With your contribution you can help make a young man's dream a reality. I will make a college degree happen. Thank you for believing in me.
