Finally, I agree with Vitale about something

Postby Mr. Neutral » Mon Mar 17, 2008 8:04 am

There were two "whipping boys" last night-
(1) South Alabama and Baylor for taking the spots of "more deserving" teams like Va. Tech, Arizona State and Syracuse, and
(2) the selection committee and its use of the RPI to keep out "more deserving" teams from the Big Six.

Bilas, in particular, but also Knight and Phelps, railed against "lesser" teams from the midmajor conferences taking spots away from the Big Six also-rans, and called on the selection committee to make its parameters more specific and public.

Vitale argued that NO system would ever eliminate the debate over who got in and who didn't, and even if the tournament was expanded to 128 teams, as advocated by Knight, that the argument would then be over teams 129, 130, etc.

He's absolutely right, for once. If anything, the midmajors can argue that #32 and #33 in the RPI NEVER would have been left out if they were Big Six teams, and 29-3 Butler, ranked in the top 10 recently, NEVER would have gotten a 7 seed if it was in a Big Six conference.
