I am a Welage fan(although he was cold for sure) but I think Steele likes his floor game, he is a tall safety valve who almost never makes a turnover, and he probably thought the numbers would even out. A few did go in and out and I (as a fan am prejudiced) I do believe his misses generate offensive rebounds as they seem predictable. My two cents but I like the guy and I don't see him getting killed on defense.

I watched Kennedy in the shoot around before the game. Must have seen him attempt 30 or more threes and didn’t see one go in. I think playing time might help him but I’m not sure he’ll be an answer for our lack of three point shooters / scorers. The other thing I noticed was that most guys just practice from one spot. Naji and Paul always in the corner. Castlin was in the other corner. Kennedy and Hardin out top. Welage was about the only guy who tried shots from different areas. What are the odds they’ll get open looks in the game from that one spot?

I am a big fan of Welage. He just had one of those days. Tre had them as well. He also was a high volume shooter who played 30 minutes a game at SJSU, so he didn't have the pressure of knowing that missing 3 consecutive shots would put him on the pine like this year. However, there are only 3 guys who I want taking a shot outside of 17 feet: Scruggs, Welage, and Harden as a distant 3rd. He also played decent D yesterday. Let's not forget Tre was often beaten like a drum defensively, but he was obviously a great offensive player, so he still was a clear net positive, as I believe Welage usually is.

Good outside shooting is a precious commodity, so if Welage is hitting shots but getting beaten on the defensive end, Steele needs to go to zone or change matchups.

Also even if Welage is not hitting, he still extends the defense. Shooters get attention. On the other hand, if goodin/Marshall hit a 3 will not stretch the D. It will just put a smile on the opponents coach if it encourages them to shoot more

Agreed he had a poor shooting game that happens but you are correct it stretches the defense and puts them on their toes. I guarantee that Wright will let Goodin and Marshall shoot 3’s at will. I think Welage should also take the ball to the hoop more with his length since that is not expected.

the three point shot... that is why Gates would have been important this year.

Gates could have been the missing link especially for shooting and he was one of our better defenders. I can't imagine seeing James back next year.
