Marquette Game thread 01/24/2018

How nice to have a game that is basically never in doubt..... A very pleasant surprise and a nice relaxing evening!

I've been going to X games since 1963. I well remember the days when XU was just a preseason whipping warm-up game for Al McGuire and Marquette, and a nice paycheck for XU's program. Usually I took my transistor radio to the games so I could listen to the call.
One year I was sitting on the plank seats listening to a great legend of an announcer from the old days, Phil Samp. Sometimes for filler, he would read the signs in the student section. One XU-MU game was in warmups at Schmidt when Mr. Samp spotted a guy walking up and down with a sign which Mr. Samp read over the airwaves: "There's a young fan holding up a sign that reads Muck'em Fuskies, Muck'em fuskies? Oh... Ohhhhhhhhh."
Loved those good old Marquette days. And what I love about playing them these days is PAYBACK.

That was as good as they've played all year. 7 -2 at the halfway point of league play. I'll take it.

Defensive rotations quicker and more consistent. Dribble penetration hedging also improving although still not a strength. But I will take the solid trend. Incredible road kill on Saturday against a very solid and well coached NCAA tourney team. Followed up by tonight's methodical dismantling of a MU team in serious need of a quality road win. Very glad to see the hand-wringing about next year's recruiting class has subsided.

After the X game was over, I switched the TV over to CBS sports Chanel (and turned the sound down on the TV along with turning the radio on to catch Joe and Byron’s after the game show). They were showing the last part of the St Joe-St Bonnie game from the Bonnie’s Home floor. Followed up with the UC-Temple game.

My observations are that......Man, am I glad that X got out of the A-10 and no longer has to play in those HS gyms that so many of those schools still use, and Wow, how Temple is only a shell of what they once were.

Yeah, the blue blood programs are still mostly riding high and will continue to get the top recruits and have the most hype, but otherwise there’s been a big change that has happened over time, and X has certainly been one of those programs that has risen, while one like Marquette and Temple have fallen. The A-10 has (mostly) been taken over by the mediocre programs and has never reached the potential it once had.

Where X is now is great, and there have been many wonderful memories made along the way. Where they are going will bring even more.

And time for the walk ons

when you can play walk ons in a league game (i left with 3 min to go so don't know if they ACTUALLY got in), that's a good thing.

Q almost had THREE eye-opening plays. he made same exact move and then missed the dunk on his second try, but the alley-oop was a nice finish. he and scruggs played their best games. starting to warm up to scruggs.

not sure what to do with myself this weekend since we don't have a game.

ME too! Were either of you at the 50th reunion? I can't believe the campus--hadn't been back for about 10 yrs and even then it was just a tad different from the 60's!!

I was actually in the class of '71, but Steve Thomas was a neighbor and his younger brother, Mark, and I went to a lot games with him. More people should know about Steve Thomas. He was XU's first all-American. He dropped 50 on Detroit one night. He could shoot from either hand. And when he played, Freshmen weren't allowed to play on varsity, and there was no 3-pt line. Would love to see what that would have translated to in this day and age.

And he has the highest career scoring average at over 23 ppg which will never be broken unless we get a Mickey D, one and done, who plays incredible for his one year! Think about it, he played about 70+ games, 5 of them on one leg after his injury. Today with freshmen playing, and an estimated 35 games a year (with pre and post tourney games) that's 3220!! For arguments sake, take away 10% for tougher competition (he could score on anybody) and that's still 2898! And X won't retire his (and Sato's) number??
