I'm dumbfounded by this thread as it appears many other posters are. I can't for the life of me understand how anyone claim a player who shut down Eric Gordon and Chris Lofton among many others wilts under pressure. He's being talked about as a National Defensive Player of the year and you're claiming he wilts under pressure. Wow. I feel dumber even reading posts claiming this.

I'll throw in my opinion.
When it was Stan's jogb to score he scored.
When it was his job to play point, he played point.
Now coach wants Stan to be the Defensive Stopper and after working hard on it he was the Stopper.
( A-10 defensive player of the year) ( not a shabby title)
Funny thing about scoring points.
Curry from Davidson was looked upon like Michael Jordan or something., as he scored 30 points to lead them to a win over Georgetown. Well he shot 36 TIMES, 8-21 from two point range including layups, and 5-15 from three point range.
I do not think of these numbers as great percentages. good yes Great no,

Yes, he is a great player, but he who shoots the most , should have the most points, just as Stan did his first two years.

Just an opinion. GO MUSKIES!

It never ceases to amaze me how difficult it is for some people to stay on point. When the question is how will SB perform under the pressure of NCAA games (where you lose you go home) someone will make reference to games during the season, or last year, or his entire career. That's not the point of discussion. When the question is can SB make a jump shot someone will respond that he makes layups or plays good defense. Again that's the point of discussion. Everyone is so defensive when it comes to Stan.....it's like you're either 12 years old and you have his poster in your room and wear his jersey to bed or you arrive at your opinions based on what you read or hear instead of what you see on the floor. SB is like a blind date.....when I ask if she is good looking you tell me she has a good personality and plays the piano.

Sweet, I've put up the numbers of SB's last 4 NCAA games, both FG's and FT's. How have I not addressed the question?

The original post said "But, when the game is on the line, Burrell cannot hit a shot. This is proven by his shooting stats in the NCAA tournament. In fact, the commentator mentioned that in the last 3 tournament games Burrell has only made one field goal!!!!! "

First of all, that's in incorrect statement. In SB's last 3 NCAA tournament games, he's hit 4 FG's, NOT 1.

Second, what shots with the game on the line has SB missed? In the last 8 minutes of the Georgia game (when it was tied), SB neither took nor missed any FG's. He split a pair of FTs.

In the last 5:44 of the Purdue game (after Purdue took its last lead), SB neither took nor missed any FG's. He split 6 FT's.

So, again, we all agree that SB is not lighting up the scoreboard. However, he's also not missing shots in crunch time because (1) other guys are taking them, or (2) he's getting fouled.

Check it out; SB has NO missed FGs in the last 10 minutes combines of our two NCAA games.

And that's a fact. You might as well call out Derrick Brown for not having enough assists or Drew Lavender for not having enough dunks.

And if you want to go back to SB/s 1st NCAA game (Gonzaga), he led X in scoring with 22 points, including 4-8 from the arc and 6-6 from the FT line, along with 5 assists and 1 steal.

sweet,

You are naive to believe that after the opening tip, an NCAA Tourney game isn't like any other against good competition during the regular season. Players are either prepared or they are not.

Those who've ever played competitive sports beyond T-Ball or Pop Warner football know that once the game is on, you focus only on the task at hand and not on the hoopla surrounding the game. You may have some extra adrenaline pumping as a game gets closer or as the other team makes a run at you, but it is little different whether that run is a home game in late December, an important Conference game in late February, or a Sweet Sixteen NCAA Tourney game in late March. The stakes for the players playing the game are the same: winning or losing.

Don't over-analyze this thing! Let's just rejoice in the fact that our Muskie coaching staff has a multitude of good options from which to select and let's place our trust in them to push the right buttons at the right time.

Sorry Nick, we'll just to agree to disagree on this one. You lose during the season and you practice the next day. You lose during the A10 tourney and (at least this year) you get ready to watch Selection Sunday. You lose tomorrow night and your competitive basketball career (for most players) comes to an immediate end. I think you're being naive if you don't think the stakes are significantly higher.

NO MAS! NO MAS! I'm bloodied, beaten, and tired. The reason you don't go back any further than last years NCAA games is because Stan didn't go into his shooting funk until late last season. Stan of his Fresh., Soph., and 3/4 of his Jr. year is a completely different player than Stan of today.

Final though, Sweet-if all we're concerned about is the Burrell of NOW, then his most recent game (11 pts, 4 assists, 2 steals against Purdue) is what he is at this moment in time.

If you discount his 1st NCAA game because that's too long ago, and discount his last game because his numbers in that game were OK (and he didn't take or miss any shots down the stretch), but only pick the games in between where he DID shoot poorly from the field, then you're only looking for info to prove up a conclusion you've already reached.

I think we all agree that the team hasn't looked to SB at game's end to hit the shot; fortunately, others have stepped up. I'd be more upset if he WAS taking the last shot and missing, but that's not been the case.

So, to get back to millersdad's initial point, he's worried about something that hasn't been the case, and doesn't appear to be part of Xavier's end-of-game plan. Why are we arguing about it, I might ask?

To defend myself I couldn't have said it better than sweet16...too many people get off the point i was trying to make and extrapulate it into something else. I know that stanely is a good defender and has other important skills but my post was that he chokes offensively under pressure the bigger the game - mainly ncaa tournment games... stanley burrell is a shooting guard who cannot shoot under pressure (thats why layups are not included...a layup isn't an open jump shot) . And the stats don't lie...stanely is 0-16 in jump shoots...for a shooting gurad.....that is choking...under normal, non pressure games...he shoots much better...so don't get defensive about burrell...i like what he brings to the team but with the game on the line i do not want him taking the last shot because offensively he has proven he cannot hit it in big games because he does not do well in this aspect of his game under pressure....so keep on my point...i like what sweet 16's analogy....when I ask if she is good looking you tell me she has a good personality and plays the piano.
