Re: Creighton game thread
The first half was rock bottom. Maybe the second half will turn their fortunes around.

Re: Creighton game thread
Where did we go?
To Mr. Monday Morning QB, who, based on Steele's record against teams he was supposed to beat in his tenure, has only been able to gloat about 27% of the time, I was at Hollywood Casino with a group of X-fans who, one by one, started leaving the TV area to go to the tables, and even loyal AH was the last to abandon watching another Steele masterpiece after the 12th bad shot with about 5 minutes to go. In the 1st half, Steele's only adjustment was ordering grape Capri Suns from Orange for the next Gold Jersey week.
As bad as Steele coached in the first, he was equally good in the 2nd. Neutral game for him, but's that's a win for him based on coaching metrics during his tenure through three years. The beauty for him, is that it doesn't really require much effort, since adjusting is not his forte. As I said to our group, if X wins, it will be like an AAU game. One team just starts to out play/score others. Creighton Gauchos beat X by 17 in the first, and X's All OH Red outscored the Gauchos by 27 in the 2nd half.
Kudos to Scruggs, who played a much better 2nd half (only one ridiculous shot) and Free, who also played well, though 7-16 is not very efficient. Today also proved what I and many national pundits say. X has deep run talent this year......On the floor at least. BTW MM, why aren't you gloating about Hunter shooting threes, as you did several games ago???
One unfortunate Steele trend is that few of the recruits of have actually turned out to be big contributors. After a good game against Iowa St., a guy X will need next year in Edwards has hardly seen the floor, despite some horrific play by Free in most games. Same happened to Ramsey, and Tandy, after a stellar year, but can't see the floor, even in games when X can't hit the side of the barn. God forbid he comes in and hits three straight treys in a row, b/c it will only magnify the not too closely guarded secret that his evaluation skills of players made Marvin Lewis look like Bellicheck. Thrilled the Muskies won. Thrilled, thrilled, thrilled! Just hope talent prevails for the rest of the year, b/c the captain of the ship only changes course after hitting seven icebergs.

29-2 run! HUGE win. Roadkill! A real mood changer for X fans. BTW, I never turn my teams off at the half. Even if they ended up getting beat badly, i would have watched every minute. I am more confident now that we will win the next two at home v Butler and DePaul. I hope I am right on that. That would put us at 7-4 in the BE. Not a bad place to be.

It certainly can be fool's gold, when you see a chart of X's 3 point shooting percentage in games. I'm ok with Jonson shooting as many as he wants, and Kunkel shooting a lot when hot. Tany als......uh, forget that. Moot point. Scruggs, Jones, Nunge, and others also, when they shoot it from areas they are comfortable shooting it from. Someone should tell Free his pt will go from 37 to 36 minutes a game if he keeps clanking multiple threes, especially when down big, or when in a close games, or ANYTIME. He definitely should not cede to the advice of my mentor: ANy shot is a good shot by any player when open, even in the deep corner behind the backboard like Steph Curry does.X-lucidity wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 4:28 pmI have the B...'s Plus, Coach Steel owes me. I did everything I could to tempt the sports gods by bragging to my wife at halftime how I was all set to win some nice dinner $$. Presto, Jack hits three 3's and the Jays get a lump in their throat.
But seriously, nice win, nice fortitude. Can't keep digging these holes. Maybe, just maybe, this recaptures some of our early season swag. Travis is right, confidence is the mother of all drugs. We won by making an unbelievable % behind the arc 2nd half, which can be fools gold, but also started to play well on offense in general last 10 minutes with fantastic ball movement and spacing. That is a great sign. Plus D was outstanding all 2nd half. best sign, we won majority of 50/50 balls second half. OK, HUGE win. Just imagine a universe where we came out flat 2nd half and lost by 14 or so, not pretty. That's how big this was. Let's build on this.

Didnt watch the game, so a box score analyst today. I will give Travis credit for sticking with Nate and encouraging him to keep shooting. Looks like we won on the glass and had the the 3 point game rocking. Even though Creighton is not a very good team, a road win in the BE is a good win.

I would respond to your points but I am in too good a mood to start a pissing match against a fan that is buried in his negative points after a win. There are other boards for guys like you. You should frequent them. They are still fixated on the first halfAnti-Homer wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 5:02 pmWhere did we go?

I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

I'm the 3rd biggest fan behind Hops and X Luc. This is rich coming from a guy who gloats after ever win, which have been far too precious during the Steele era. As I've said, I know this is the year X breaks through and the players compensate for other deficits. Sorry, objectivity is a trait I can't shake, even for my beloved muskies. Any know who won the the Pittbull Chain today?

Re: Creighton game thread
Great, great win today. Still, I remain a Steele skeptic. I do like the emphasis (from his coach, I assume) that Scruggs put on taking it inside.
The first half wasn't as bad as the score made it look. We were getting good shots but they didn't go down. The second half wasn't as good as the score made it appear. Some of those threes, early in the shot clock, were not great shots. Still, they went in. We won today because a strategy that hasn't worked much since in-conference play started, finally worked. That doesn't mean our coach is a genius. It does mean that his strategy can work.
One concern I have expressed about Steele that I will retract, is that his lack of confidence has become a contagion to this team. They could easily have quit this game after halftime. They didn't. They got help in that shots fell which haven't fallen this season. Lot of credit to Steele and to the team for coming back.
Like everyone else on this board, supporter or critic of Steele, I hope this is a breakthrough win that gives this team the confidence they need down the stretch.
