84, it sounds as if you have a chip on your shoulder. As long as you have lived here you should be use to XU getting dissed by the enquirer. XU just needs to keep on truckin!!

Grad, I don't have a chip on my shoulder. I just think the program deserves local recognition. Over the last 20+ years, we have been this areas most consistent sports success story. I'm sick of reading about overpaid steroid laced professional athletes and other local colleges that, while posessing a larger alumni base in the area, frankly just aren't as good as our Musketeers.

I can't argue with you on any of those points. You are right on, they do deserve more recognition, but you are not going to get it from the enquirer. If I remember right there are even XU alums on the enquirer sports staff or there use to be and we still didn't get any support.

Re: No Love From The Enquirer
To be honest all this whining about the Enquirer is absolutely pointless. Dustin Dow had his entire NCAA hoops blog dedicated to XU hoops for its entire existence. They had to add the UC Sports blog only because they realized they didn't have anyone covering Bearcat football. Not only that but read Bill Koch's articles about UC hoops vs Dow's about XU. Koch's are more objective and are written better than Dow's cheerleader XU articles. If I am copy editor I put the better written article on top. Not only that but UC's turnaround in Big East play is a a much better story than XU's dominance in the A10.
Not only that but think about media coverage of off the field issues regarding UC and XU. The CJ Anderson story last year took Dow two to three weeks to report, whereas that UC football player's story was in there the following morning after the incident. When no charges were ever filed against CJ there as a huge story essentially apologizing for ever running it. When no charges were ever filed against the UC football player they had a small one paragraph side bar about it next to high school girls basketball box scores.
Thats just my opinion on the matter.

Re: No Love From The Enquirer
Who cares. UC is the primary univerity in this town and will always be. They haven't made the tourney in 3 years, have been on some type of probation under Huggins in 3 of his 15 years, but they will always be one good season away from taking all the pub. Even while X is in the top 15, radio stations still get little attention from XU fans. Who cares? If X is called a mid-major - who cares. If UC, Rutgers, NW, Penn St are majors for being affilated to that conference then it doesn't matter. Remember, when Marquette and SLU were in the MCC with X, they were a "joke". Is Marquette now a major power? Charlotte was UC's biggest threat and rivalry, since joining the A-10, X is 5-0 vs them. In fact the only thing affiliation Charlotte has to UC is how pissed off Charlotte is at Huggin for his midnight recruiting of Michael Beasley. It's all about perception. UC still is living in the d Nick Van "bankruptcy" Excel or Danny "I grew up in the projects but wrecked my Lexus" Fortson era. They went to an Elite 8 11 years ago and Final Four 16 years ago. In the last 10 years, X has done much better. Nationally, UC is a joke. Only in Cincinnati does UC matter. They were called Paper tigers in SI for their 2nd round losses under Huggins. Now they are called being part of the "little east" by ESPN. Maybe Cronin (money man under Huggins) will turn the national perception of UC around-maybe not. Until they win a tourney game, who cares. Remember, every year we hear how X game is more important to us, well, next year, like every other year, this will be the ONE game that will be sold out before the season starts. So to XU fans, don't worry about the local love of UC, it will never change. If X has 35,000, UC has 200,000. Also, there is a reason Butler wasn't mentioned in this posting, other than the name of this poster, Butler is never discussed.

Re: No Love From The Enquirer
I consider it a good sign that X fans don't regularly partake in the local radio sports talk, and in fact are very absent most of time. Call it profiling, but most of the callers sound like idiots. Better to put it here in print where our intelligence or idiocy is on display 24/7 for others to digest and comment upon.
I had no idea when I started this post it would go for almost week. We've beat it to death. Lets go read our Sunday Enquirer and move on. You can read about the Reds pitching staff on page 1 and about Lavender's bad ankle at the bottom of C7. Enjoy!

I can't believe this post lasted this long. Quit crying about the Enquirer. Xavier has always done better when they fly under the radar. Even if the Enquirer doesn't love them, the rest of the nation does.

SouthernMuskie, glad to hear from you--long time with no posting. If you still lived in Cincinnati, you'd have a much better feel for the print media neglect of our Muskies. But we are darn lucky to get a huge two page spread on NASCAR every week. With that and the Reds starting spring training, I just plan on going to C7 or beyond for my morning Muskie fix.

84, you only get 2 pages on NASCAR? Practically the entire AJC is devoted to NASCAR and college football. They only mention college basketball on Sundays. Rumor has it there's a Presidential Election this year. Any idea who's running. I guess I'll need to go to the internet to find out.

All you need to know is McCain in the presidential race. And I thought you were in SEC country. You can't get basketball news?
