If I was inclined to break rules to create an advantage for my preferred university and believed they had a great coach, I would go out of my way to ensure that coach doesn't know anything about the improper behavior. Find someone connected to the program that is dispensable and willing to participate. Ensure that person understands it must be kept from the coach at all costs and offer an incentive to follow through.

If the goal is getting top talent and keeping them eligible, it would also be the goal to keep them playing for a top level coach. Because there is a risk of getting caught, damage would be greatly minimized if the HC is not involved and not aware.

It is certainly possible that Sean was involved and the statement claiming he knows nothing was all about hush money but that is a low probability unless he was the mastermind behind it. There is every incentive to keep him in the dark. The probability of him knowing something was going on but ignoring it is reasonably high but is all speculation.

I suspect the school did a character assessment on Sean before hiring him. If he did well in that assessment they likely concluded that he was in the dark about what transpired. Certainly no guarantees he was innocent but what more can you do? Taking the safe route and excluding Sean is also no guarantee that it is the right move given that it is possible he did nothing wrong and is simply guilty of circumstances.

The HC never knows... Calipari, Sutton, Pitino, Wooden, Tarkanian, Coach K and many others didn't know either. They say do it, or get it done and walk away. It's up to the assistants to figure out how to get it done... Dan

I have reservations but choose not to be judged by someone who roots for a mid-major whose team will forever be known as UNLV East. If you are truly an X grad, name seven teachers who you had, and answer," What color is the boathouse at Hereford?"
