Wise: It is easy to loose sight of all returning talent. The new Big Mac should see plenty of floor time next year but I would not draw so much comparison to DBrown as Mac plays more as prototype PF, in the paint, cleans glass, blocks shots. Scoring the ball...not so much. But Mac is at least 6'8" 225 lbs.
The "trouble" with Brian Walsh, to resume this thread's origin, is he is a bit of a "tweener" in stature. XU will see no shortage of perimeter players next year and maybe Walsh would benefit by a transition redshirt year. He is a very tough player but next year's minutes should be tough to come by. I understand it is speculative to suggest that route at this point.

"pass UD as a program."
I don't know, Detroit had Dickie V. and play in the mighty Horizon.
This is the only UD you could possibly be talking about, isn't it?

to quote Dickie V, Sean Miller will say, "OH, BABY!"Wisexuowl wrote:And to think that they will compete with Derrick, BJ, CJ, Dante, Adrion, and Jason
for PT....
Naw, Sean ain't leaving this vineyard for a program that will be on probation, ineligible for the dance, and have a limit on recruiting and scholarships.
Book it!

Re: Brian Walsh
As a freshman, Jamel was the #1 offensive rebounder and #1 defensive rebounder for Tulsa based upon rebound percentage. He ranked #161 in offensive rebounding in the country and #148 defensively. Mind you, Tulsa as a team was the #51 offensive rebounding team nationally and the #17 defensive rebounding team nationally. He wasn't playing with rebounding slouches -- he played on a team of rebounders, so he didn't get his rebounds by default.Wisexuowl wrote:Oh my! Yep, sure did forget about J Mac; As a Freshman at Tulsa he averaged 17 minutes a game, 5 boards a game and 6.5 ppg.
He also shot 55% from the field and was 42% behind he line.
He was just 56% at the free throw line, but not to worry, as soon as Millersdad get his feet corrected he'll jump into the 75% range.
But Joe, I wouldn't be forecasting any red shirt decisions ... seems to me that Sean says minutes depend on practice, and he will see a lot of Brian between June and November
It appears that pretty soon we will catch up and pass UD as a basketball power.
Jamel was also the #65 shot blocker in the country, again Tulsa's best by block percentage. Tulsa was a helluva shot blocking team, #15 in the country. Tulsa was a great defensive team, particularly in the paint (#5 nationally in 2 pointer defense). Hopefully Jamel was a big part of that. The numbers suggest that he might have been.
Offensively he was great at getting to the line, probably due to offensive rebounding -- getting there at a rate that would have put him in the 100 best if he played enough to be a qualifier in that category. Jamel needs to improve into a 70+% free throw shooter instead of a 56% shooter. Oddly enough Jamel did make 2 of 5 from 3 point range. It remains to be seen if he has any range to his game or if he has any dribbling prowess. He was turnover prone.
Jamel looks to be a really good pick up. He has two years on the incoming freshmen and a year of division 1 ball under his belt already at a league comparable to the A-10. Realistically, Jamel might be the odds on choice to be the most productive of the 6 newcomers.

Re: Brian Walsh
It is actually looking like Redford coauld be redshirted because we are "more" stacked at his postitions...and the fact that the coaches think he nay need to improve his D and get stronger. Walsh, on the other hand, according to Scoop Snow, is the most college ready. He can play both the 2 and 3, and after next year Raymond and CJ will both be gone...hence the need for an experienced 3. Then again, everything can, and usually does change during practice. The "trouble" with Brian Walsh, to resume this thread's origin, is he is a bit of a "tweener" in stature. He will have three years of eligibility and can play the 5 as well as his natural 4.

Re: Brian Walsh
After talking with someone close to the coaches, you have to be excited about McClean. If you recall he won the dunk contest at the preseason scrimmage. He was described as another Brown (as stated above) only stronger. Now I would expect that Brown will be stronger next year after another summer on the weights. Makes for two terrific 4's. Both can run and dunk. If we rebound and our guards can push it, we should be in good shape.
I guess most have given up on Bronson--a practice center, but I still think that Miller has an idea that he might still contribute. No doubt we have seen the offensive side of Charles. It may be too late but we have seen players make great leaps in ability from year to year. Hope he works hard.

Re: Brian Walsh
Any chance that Andrew Taylor provides anything other than a body to bang against in practice? Looks like he had some decent numbers as a frosh, although it was not at the D-1 level.
The minutes will, no doubt, be tough to come by and will have to be earned next year. Is it possible for Taylor to steal some of them?

Re: Brian Walsh
Hope not xman95. I hope competition is so great that Taylor is a good player when the walk-ons are called on.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.
