The spread is derived from the Sagarin ratings (or a similar system); it doesn't come out of someone's head. If you look at the Sagarin "Predictor" and do the arithmetic, it indicates that Xavier should win by closer to 15 points. The 10.5 point spread takes into account the fact that Xavier-Dayton is a rival game.
