Travis Steele

Postby Larry Sykes » Thu Mar 03, 2022 10:11 am

I've been laying low in the weeds the last 3-4 seasons, watching these talented teams flame out in February and March. I've noticed there have been mostly negative posts about Steele, that he should be fired or needs to revamp his coaching staff. To me, I haven't seen any improvement on his end throughout his tenure. I'm convinced what we see is what we are gonna get... which is not "Deep run in tourney" stuff.

While there are mostly Anti-Steele posters on this board, there are some supporters and apologists, like Muskieman. I've heard all of the great ideas from the Anti-Steele guys so I am curious what people like Muskieman think. Should he get another year? another 2 years? Do you think he's got the goods to get us back to making Tourney runs? If so, please share

Still too early for me to form that opinion for the simple fact that the season is not over.

There were tons of people who wanted Matta to get fired during his final season at X, before The Run was all said and done. We most likely wouldn't have even made the NCAA tournament that year had we not won the A10 tournament. (Such was life in the A-10.) But many of those same critics still hate Matta for leaving Xavier.

If we do not make the tournament, Steele is and should be done.

If we make the tournament but flake out in the first round (or worse, we lose a a play-in game), he should be done, but might not be. For me, the marginal improvement would be too little, too late. Do not know what the admin what think.

However, if we make a deep run in the Big East tournament, get either the automatic bid or an at-large bid, and win at least one game in the Big Dance, then he will get and should get one more season.

So I guess the other Georgetown game isn't going to be made up? We could really use it right about now. 19 wins going into the post season would be helpful.
Let's March!

i have said all year and still stand by this - if we don't make the tourney then he should be done. don't care about the buyout or whatever. 4 years of this is enough.

the biggest issue i have is that i have ZERO faith that Greg Christopher can hire the right person. the new Prez needs to clean house EVERYWHERE and it starts with Christopher. get a REAL AD in there who can make the right coaching hires, not just for men's basketball (but that IS and always will be the most important one) but for ALL sports.

i'm not asking this program to be winning consecutive, multiple, or even ONE BE title (ya know Mike K hasn't won an ACC reg season title since 2006?) but this program can and SHOULD be a "top half of the BE" type of program every year.

it's not right now.

that's disappointing.

Let's be real this team is not going to make the tourney and have lost five straight. The team is lost and Steele continues to fumble with lineups at least he is not saying "Paul is a Warrior" and the leader of this team. I almost feel as bad as the day that Muskieman banned me for six months for relaying a conversation that Mack and I had at a high school tourney. Being right about Steele does not make me happy either.

Should he get another year? No
Will he get another year? Yes. I don't see Xavier firing a coach unless he does something to embarrass the school. Now you could say the play on the court is embarrassing but I don't think that's enough.I think there's a better chance he resigns than gets fired and I don't see that happening either. Plus the financial condiserations. He has 2 more years left on his contract. And his father in law is on the board . I will not be looking forward to next season sadly. That's a first for me

imho only...good luck selling game tickets for next year if Steele is back....no Cintas game will be a sell out "to start" the season.

Although I had given up any rooting interest in Xavier basketball by the time that Travis Steele was hired, I was struck by the potential problem with that hire. As some of you may know his wife is the daughter of rather heavy-duty Xavier boosters who have generously supported both the university and the athletics program. At the time of the hire, I wondered if the men’s basketball program should go “tits up” during his tenure, just how the program was going to rid itself of Coach Steele.

My dear friend Muskieman will happily demonstrate for you the Jesuit handshake, and thus here we are, will the athletics program risk the major donor loss or are Xavier fans stuck with Tay Baker for the foreseeable future?
