OT--6, Part 1

OK, the Friday October 21, 1966 (OMG that's 55 yrs ago!!!!!) the Xavier News was packed with goodies so I think I'm going to have to split it into two parts.
The first part will be about football, AND coincidently since Denny Caponi was just selected for the X Hall of Fame, it contains a feature article on "Denny 'Monster Man' Caponi". So let's get a first hand account of our hall of famer!

"Outstanding in the 24-10 loss to Ohio U (making our record 2-3) was senior defensive ace Denny Caponi who was credited with 14 unassisted tackles and helped out on 8 others. Denny's position is termed the "X" or "monster" man. When asked about his job in the Muskie defense he said, 'the rover back is primarily a run defender. I always go to either the opponent's strong side formation or the wide side of the field. From the pre-game reports and movies (wow the technology we had!) we can spot a team's tendencies and it's my job to try to stop their favorite plays. In normal circumstances, if a smell a play, I can free lance where I want.'
In certain situations this year Denny has been called upon to go in as an offensive full back. 'In these situations I'm primarily a blocking back and I usually bring a play into the game.' "

Well not always it seems because in our upset victory later in the year against Western Michigan , Denny ripped off a 45 yard touchdown run. So Congratulations Denny on your outstanding play and your soon to be induction into the Hall of Fame.

Elsewhere in the sport section, I see that of the 33 players on the freshman team, 26 were from Ohio and 17 of those were from Cincy. We were truly a national brand!!

And lastly, the News says we are gearing up to avenge our 1 point loss to the 4 and 1 Moccasins of Chattanooga (we were 0-4 lifetime against the Moc's! WTF!) Ok, I'll look it up in my yearbook cuz the memory fails! Yea! we did win 27-10 and earlier had taken down the bear kittens 25-13 (aren't they like the #2 or #3 team in the nation?) Unfortunately, we lost to Udump 9-2 and ended up 4-6.
