Who do you want as the next Head coach?

Anti-Homer - It seems you where a "luke warm fan of Mack" so I have to remind you of his first year that was on the Xavier website. This is right from the site' Chris Mack, the 09-10 Basketball Times Rookie Coach of the Year, was 26-9 in his first season as Xavier's head coach. He was the winningest first-year head coach in Division 1 for that season and tied the school record for the most ever by an XU rookie head coach (26). Mack was the only rookie head coach to lead his team into the 2010 NCAA tournament. In addition, Mack became the first Xavier head coach to guide XU to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in his first season as coach. Mack led Xavier to a 26 win season, the first time in school history that was without at least two seniors on the roster. In addition, he accomplished that feat with NO RETURNING DOUBLE FIGURE SCORES FROM LAST SEASON. It was even more impressive record when you consider XU had played arguably its toughest schedule ever. l (At that time) think that you are not giving him enough credit. He did what 99% of us would do if you got 28 mill over 7 years. He is no different than our previous coaches did and it provided a lifetime security for his family and beyond. Trying to minimizing his job performance is ridiculous. Now, I am for continuity and I would like to see Steele as out new coach. Go Xavier!

After having time to contemplate this all I feel better now. I got to thinking and looking at what Mack had actually accomplished at X and there may have been some inflated results ( inflated may not be the best word fortuitous maybe is better?) anyway.

2009-10 Sweet 16 won with Miller's guys ( and had some rough outings all season we almost lost to Dayton at home.. gasp)
2010-11 Won A10 lost to Marquette first round
2011-12 Sweet 16 again Miller's core guys ( we all know the regular season) Beat a 15 seed to get to S16..
2012-2013 Blah...
2013-2014 First 4 loss.
2014-15 Sweet 16, Beat a 14 seed to get there.
2015-16 Best team to date, 2nd round exit.
2016-17 Elite 8 Trevon played out of his mind. (Arizona game best game he coached by far)
2017-18 Best team X has had.. 2nd round exit.

So in looking, we really lucked out with at least 2 of those sweet 16's not saying we wouldn't have won against Duke (12) and Baylor (15), but it would have been much harder. So in summation, the results may be skewed a bit on the greatness of Chris Mack.

Totally agree-good for Mack but parlaying last three years (2 great regular seasons and 1 great tourney run) to a huge opportunity at Louisville. This recruiting class got him this opportunity and ironically, he had his worse class on his year out. I do think Mack did a great job recruiting but was never a great in-game coach but seemed to get better through the years. If Louisville and Pitino didn't get in trouble, Mack would not have gotten (or deserve) the raise that X offered him. Still would have liked to have him based on the trajectory but ok with him moving on.

We continue to say that our former coaches were good recruiters but not outstanding in game coaches (Matta, Miller and Mack). That narrative is a bit tired IMO. If it is true, wouldnt we want to deviate from that tree?

I get it Skip but keep in mind these are just opinions-just like the news guys do on ESPN/Fox etc. I do agree that it is hard to measure what makes a good in game coach. I would guess you can look at the efficiencies in which at one point X was over 140 defensive efficiency but top 20 offensive. I would say that this would show some lacking in their D. Blowing two double digit leads late against Providence and FSU (not great teams) would make people question in game decisions. At the same time winning as many close games as they did during the year vs Depaul (twice), ETSU, St Johhs, GT would indicate good in game decisions were made. Again, just opinions-we all have them
