the Alumni, the AD - even the fans, but if you don't support the players expect some to leave and team morale to suffer. I even wonder if team morale was suffering during FSU loss. The players input is needed at XU and anywhere else that loses their coach.

Players input
Our players are the ones actually dribbling, passing, shooting, defending, etc.... Maybe this happened in meeting with AD, but getting their input as to who is head coach seems appropriate. Thought Scruggs came out in support of Steele. You can try to support the Board of Directors at XU,

Re: Players input
I agree to some extent they should be heard but they are mercurial and temporary players just like students are in this situation. Their foresight and opinions are only immediate and limited. If a player leaves then it might be in his best interest, if the coach hired does not fit his style and ability, but I would question his loyalty to the school the claimed to be proud of being a member. I am glad that Paul likes Steele and has endorsed him. He would be prime on my list but if he is not the coach I hope the players rally around that coach and play for the school that offers them an education and opportunity to play College Basketballxu koop scoop wrote: ↑Wed Mar 28, 2018 9:45 amOur players are the ones actually dribbling, passing, shooting, defending, etc.... I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Re: Players input
Muskieman - I agree that the players in scheme of things are basically short term and the head (hopefully) is more long term. But, XU has success and seemingly improved with each hire. This has XU the ability to move to the Big East and while that has improved our status we are still at a disadvantage against the blue bloods. With the exception of Nova we still don't have that ELITE status. I remember when that lady who was the AD at the time picked Miller almost immediately and there was a great uproar that we had not had a national search. XU has had continuity because we have hired from within and each coach that has left had hired very good assistants and I truly believe that Steele is ready for the head coaching position. If we bring in a outsider who has no idea what Xavier stands for it is more likely will upset the apple cart. Now, whatever XU does I will always support their decision. Go Xavier!

Re: Players input
I think player input is important. My understanding is several players led by Dante Jackson pushed for Mack to get the job.But the school owes it to itself to conduct a national search. That's how we got Gillen and Matta. In the end I think it still comes back to Steele but who knows.I'm sure there are a lot of coaches who are interested in this job. I heard Chris Collins and Tommy Amaker mentioned. Not saying I'd take them over Travis but I would at least talk to them. Can't hurt

Re: Players input
I understand the players are only here for 4 years, we hope. Actually some are here 5 if they redshirts. That is longer than Matta was coach & the same as Miller. So, I still like players input since coaches can turn as fast or faster than some of the players.

Re: Players input
I think what the players think in this case means a lot. We just lost a big class but we have Q and tyrique who essentially have two full years of starting experience plus gates the senior and Scruggs and naji who were impact freshmen.
Assuming Steele gets it (I hope he does) and keeps those guys happy and our recruits in the fold we're still probably a top half big east team and tourney team next year. Then Steele gets a good recruiting class or two and we're right back on our feet.
Now imagine they grab someone else and we lose the recruits and one or two of that scruggs/naji/q/tyrique core transfers.
We're looking at all time bad, like uc in micks first couple years bad for the next couple years. Then you're counting on really building from nothing. That's tough for anyone to do. And I think that's what a lot of these older more successful coaches have happen sometimes when they go somewhere new (crean, Matta, tubby smith, etc).
Travis Steele all the way!
