X gets their assistant coach

Kareem Richardson has been hired to fill the assistant coach vacancy on XU men's basketball staff.

I guess they didn't want anyone here to have a heart attack waiting.

I know folks at Drake and a couple of days ago I got this message from one of them.

Kareem is an excellent person and a very smart coach. He is ready to be a head coach at the college level. The Xavier fans will love Kareem and his family and they will simply fall in love with Kareem’s little son. He is about 7 years old and is known to beat much older kids at H.O.R.S.E. you will see him giving the players hi 5’s when they take the court. After the game he takes the court himself to shoot basketballs until his dad drags him off. I will Miss them very much.

In a followup call with others at Drake, I heard much the same thing -- great coach, great family man, and top recruiter. Sounds alot like the man he is replacing.

Richardson's resume looked excellent. He should be a top-notch addition to the staff.

It will be great for Davis and Lyons to have an experienced PG coach to learn under. Maybe shot selection will improve next season.

Richardson is a really good catch for X. He has recruiting impact in Chicago and the upper Midwest, which has been a good region for X in the past. Also - and this is just wild speculation - he may have the chops to step in at the top spot if Coach Mack decides to chase the dollar in the next few years. Not only is he a great pick up for now, but I think he doubles as head coach insurance for later on.

I agree, Joel. Richardson seems to have head coach written all over him, and maybe at X.

I get the same impression about Richardson looking like he will soon be a head coach. It is great insurance for X but at the same time could leave X looking for another assistant within a couple years should the right opportunity come along. Seems like a great get regardless of how many years he is around.
