Xavier @ Nova - Last 4 Years

Postby mumuskie87 » Tue Jan 09, 2018 5:41 pm

Xavier has not beaten Nova at Nova since the start of the new BE.
The games have not been close.
The average over the 4 games - Nova 86 Xavier 63.
To be fair, Nova has been dominant at home in conference over the past 4 years.
They are 33-3 at home - an over 90% winning pct.
The only 3 losses were to Creighton in 2014. CU actually blew them out - 96 to 68. That was Dougie McDermott's team but the star that day was Wragge (remember him?). He took 14 shots - all from 3 and made 9. CU made 21 of 35 3's that.
PC beat them in 2016 - 82-76 in overtime.
And Butler beat them last year - 74-66.
One common denominator - all 3 games Nova was held to under 70 points in regulation.
Nova doesn't score under 70 very often but think X has to accomplish that to win the game.
Back to the 4 games at Nova.
About the only stat X beat Nova on was total rebounds - 132 to 129.
Nova has shot 43% from 3 while X has averaged 28%
Nova has averaged 12 made 3's against X.
2 pt field goals - Nova has shot 62% and X 45%
Nova has had 93 assists to just 34 TO's - an Assist/TO ratio of 2.7.
They have averaged 23 assists per game.
X has only 52 assists to 59 TO's.
Tre has not played well on the road at Nova. His KenPom Offensive Rating for the 3 games has been 77, 83 and 76 vs. an overall career avg of around 115.
And is 5-14 from 2 and only 2-16 from 3
JP has played better - 8 for 18 from and 5 for 8 from 2.
Defense has to be better.
JP and Tre need to catch fire from the field and X needs to minimize TO's to have a chance for the upset.
I heard Brad Redford on WLW yesterday afternoon and he brought up a good point in that the game is being played at Wells Fargo and not The Pavilion.
2 of the above mentioned losses were played at the Wells Fargo Center.
Hope X can rise to the occasion and knock off the #1 ranked team in the nation.

Wow,

Great analysis. I knew they dominated us, but this looks like the difference between the top and bottom teams in a league. I don't think the talent disparity has been great either. They have X's number. Time to exorcise the demon.

I don't care if they play @ Franklin Field, this XU team holding "Nova < 70 pts is pure fantasy.

Damn, good stats 87. Did not realize the discrepancy. Brunson and Bridges are a major mismatch.

I think I'd be happy with a close game .I know Nova has had really good teams but there's no reason they should abuse us this badly. Hopefully our seniors play pissed off and say I'm mad as hell and not going to take it anymore

I think there are five keys:

1.X needs to pound it in the post, because Nova does not have any depth with their bigs. Getting Spellman into foul trouble will allow them to dominate on the boards.
2. Goodin needs to be very aggressive taking it to the hole because he is too quick for Brunson. I think they may put Booth on him. Divincenzo is up to the task though.
3. Gates and Marshall have to lock down on Bridges.
4. X needs to limit turnovers, and punish Nova like they did to UC when they applied pressure, by scoring.
5. Bluiett needs to shake out of his slump.

AH's homerish crystal ball says X 83, Nova 80.

Good analysis.

Saw DePaul, in an 18 point loss, still out-rebound the Wildcats. Pound it down low, pound it down low, pound it ... you've got it!

DePaul's Marin Maric, 17 points, 10 rebounds and looked as if he was All-Big East vs. Villanova. Jones, O'Mara and Kanter combined exceed Maric' talent.

Brunson really tough, and need to make him understand he is not the only one on the court with moxie. Double-team him early and make someone else handle the ball. If you sit on Brunson, he'll yo-yo you to death. Control the tempo. Brunson is not tall, run some early JP/Goodwin traps.

Go X!

We did win a road game at Nova in 1956 per a Nova fan website. 62 years later another win at Nova? We have beaten them a total of 5 times. We have made more deep runs in the NCAA tourney than Nova in recent years. Hope there's reason to still be watching when the last TV time out arrives under the 4 minute mark.

We've probably won about as many games in the tourney as they have over the last 4 years but I'll take their National championship over that.
