GOOD AND BAD FROM DEVEROES (Saturday 24th)

Postby jct1941 » Sun Jul 25, 2010 9:19 am

GOOD - Holloway took Slats from 10 down in the second half on his back and pulled out the game with 33 points most of which came in crunch time. Lyons had 29 points and did everything he could but his team lost. They will obviously be our starting guards and we will be very solid there.

BAD - Actually, not really so bad. The freshmen on Deer Park roofing lost again to a team made up of mostly Cincinnati State players (except for Horace and Rush) and got killed by 20 points. However, they did show flashes of some strong play. Deer Park really needed some strong guard play and it has not been there and that meant that the bigs had to bring the ball up the court and many succombed to double teams. If they would have had a Holloway or Lyons they would have been much more competitive. Deer Park will miss the tournament so unless the other teams pick some of them up this league will be over for them.

Jeff Robinson looks much improved but still needs to be more aggressive. McClean, Jackson and Frease all looked good (Frease only played one game). I am (as always) looking forward to the season and I do think we will be very good. Go Xavier!

actually, the bad could be a good thing. They are young and see they need tlo work hard to win at D-1 even in a summer league game. Second with a strong guard play, which they should have this year they will be more productive. Third not making it to the summer league tourney will give them something to think about as they watch how others do it.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Muskieman - On Saturday Lyons team lost 88 to 70 and he had 29 points. They just posted the Sunday scores and the above score is correct. They have not posted the box scores yet but Lyons team did win today (Sunday). I agree with you that they have found out that this is a whole different ball game with bigger and stronger players. The league does not play GOOD DEFENSE but the play can get very rough and the refs are not the best in the world. A thirty minute game and each player gets SIX fouls make for some physical play ala the supposed punch that Gates received. A double team becomes a RUGBY scrub and a wrestling match. For instance Canty must have hit the floor at least 5 times per game and I do not think that will be the case in a regular college game, at least not without a foul being called. We will be just fine. Go Xavier!

I agree with the lack of D in summer league which is why the X teams of the past won so much because they seemed to be the only team to play D.

If the guard play is solid it will only help the new guys. With our new transfer working out the new guys will get used to rough physical play quickly.

Lyons and Holloway scored at will. Martin plays 'easy' but active. The others will improve. JCrawford and DBrown in the house.

Were Lyons and Holloway guarding each other?
