Shannon Russell no longer with Enquirer

Postby longliveskip » Tue Oct 25, 2016 12:10 pm

Shannon Russell laid off by the Enquirer. no beat writer for the Muskies at this point. best wishes to her on her next endeavor. Loved her coverage of the Muskies. not sure who takes it over and when, but it would be nice if the local "paper" had someone to cover the best team in Cincinnati.

In that vein, on CNBC's money program this morning, they were interviewing the P&G CEO. At one point they asked him about the sports scene in Cincinnati, saying that other than Xavier it's a disaster.

The Enquirer is only a cog in the Gannett Corporation.

https://www.bloomberg.com/quicktake/the ... -newspaper

We have come a long way since Randolph Hearst built his newspaper empire 100 years ago. The Enquirer, like all paper publications, is shifting more and more to on-line content, and more importantly on-line advertising, and there is a ton more competition in that arena!!! But my biggest concern is that there is no such thing as investigative reporting any more. It was slipping with paper publications but without them it is going extinct. Everything that is published is an editorial. The skill of asking an open ended question, then drilling down on the answer to uncover new insights, is lost. It is true in sports, elections, world news, and now especially in blogs and social media. Look at the garbage passed on as news on sites like Yahoo.

Watch a press conference some time. The questions being asked are embedded with the story already being written, and are only intended for validation of the writers feelings, or evidence of covering up the opinion the writer believes as truth . Worse, the questions asked that only have an agenda to make headlines.

That is what I loved about Shannon. She asked good questions, uncovered information, and let the stories write themselves. I will miss that! Maybe Xavier can hire her to blog about the Muskies.

What's black and white and re(a)d all over?
Sure as hell won;'t be the Enquirer any more, at least for me.

If the Enquirer doesn't get another XU beat writer ASAP, my 30+ year subscription to the Enquirer is toast. It has been a close call for years, given the lousy quality of that fish wrap, but I continued my subscription for Xavier sports news and to support the "local" press. But I am out if they can't figure out a way to cover the one consistently good sports team in town.

Finding one eith with savvy knowledge of what's going on won't be easy. They should put Shannon back on the payroll. The CEO of Gannett makes over 2M/year.

I cancelled my Enquirer subscription six months ago. The entire Gannett organization is going down in a hurry. Sad.

Never liked that rag anyways. Wish Russell the best, she was an excellent reporter.
