The No. 12 Xavier Musketeers survived a scare on the road against Charlotte on Wednesday night. Luckily, senior Josh Duncan came to the rescue. Duncan played perhaps his biggest game of his career as a Muskie, scoring a team-high 25 points as Xavier won, 62-62. Duncan was a perfect 7-of-7 from the field including a huge 5-of-5 from behind the 3-point arc. X (21-4, 9-1 A-10) has now won seven straight games, while the 49ers fall to 14-9 overall and 5-4 in the league.
Once again, Duncan was terrific. His biggest shot of the game was a 3-pointer in the final minute that gave Xavier a 4-point cushion, 62-58. Charlotte's Leemire Goldwire, who scored a game-high 31 points, then drilled a basket with 0.7 left, but it was too little too late.
Derrick Brown added 11 points as the only other Musketeer in double figures scoring. Duncan also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds in the win. Stanley Burrell added nine points. Fellow senior guard Drew Lavender, who was playing with a sprained ankle, did not score, but added six assists in the winning effort.
As a team, the Muskies outrebounded the 49ers, 40-32. The game was a defensive battle, marked by a high number of turnovers. Xavier turned the ball over an uncharacteristic 22 times for the game. Charlotte gave the ball away 15 times.
Next up for Xavier is the Rhode Island Rams (20-5, 6-4) on Monday, February 18 in Kingston, Rhode Island. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
